How To Stay Fit While Traveling

Of the many joys of vacationing, perhaps the only downfall is that nagging voice constantly reminding you of the encroaching weight gain, and of the medley of dieting and exercise that patiently awaits you upon your return home. But, vacations are supposed to be relaxing, and you certainly don’t want the stress of your scale ruining all the fun that is has to offer. Because we know that you shouldn’t have to lift a finger on your vacation, unless, of course, its holding a cocktail, we’ve put together a list of simple ways to help you stay fit, and most importantly, healthy, while traveling.

1. How to Pack

Most travelers don’t consider much other than their clothes when they pack. However, in the fight against unwanted weight gain, it’s just as important to consider what you’ll need for snack time. Invariably, traveling means a lot of waiting. Whether that’s at the airport or in a car, when hunger creeps up on tired vacationers there’s always fat and calorie-laden fast food waiting at the food court, or just off the next exit. However, planning and packing ahead can help to avoid such devious temptation. Turn to fresh fruits (things like apples, oranges, and bananas are great because they won’t require refrigeration), nuts, such as super-foods walnuts and almonds, and protein-rich low-sugar granola bars.  (Note: for those traveling by plane, be sure to drink plenty of water before, during, and after your flight to counteract the extremely dry air).

2. At Your Hotel

The way you start your morning has a huge impact on how your body will process food for the remainder of the day. This means, you guessed it, eating a good breakfast. That’s oatmeal instead of sugary cereals, whole wheat toast with nut butter instead of a bagel with cream cheese, and yogurt and fresh fruit instead of pastries and fruit juices. Along with your healthy breakfast, starting your day with 8 ounces of ice water and a little cardio (jumping rope, jumping jacks, high knees, etc.) will turn your metabolism into a calorie-burning machine.

3. Eating Out

Let’s face it: a huge part of vacationing is the food. And while its perfectly acceptable to indulge every now and then, being wary of what you chose is an easy way to monitor your weight. When eating out, look to fresh vegetables as well as sources of lean protein, such a poultry and fish. Filling up on these types of foods will keep you full longer, and will also help you avoid craving the empty carbohydrates from breads and pastas. Salads can also be a great option, but pay close attention to what goes in them. Those that have more cheese than lettuce or are drenched in sugary dressings may end up doing more harm than good.

4. Making Exercise fit Your Schedule

Exercising while on vacation doesn’t have to be a chore, and it certainly doesn’t have to drag you away from the fun. Simply choosing the stairs as opposed to the elevator, and walking to your destinations whenever possible will burn more than you might think. Also, don’t be shy of the pool, or any outdoor sports that your retreat may offer. Swimming is a great source of exercise, and even if you’re not swimming laps, playing with the kids in the pool can be a full workout in itself. Say yes to activities such as tennis, beach volleyball, or any number of lower impact activities that will get you out of your seat.
